Tips & Guidelines for Writing Your Own Vows

    Brigham Young
    November 20, 2020
Writing your own wedding vows can make the night so memorable, but what if you get butterflies in your stomach and don’t know how to fully say I love you? Here are a few guidelines and ideas for writing your own vows. Feel free to share in the comments anything that you are planning on doing or share some advice you have been given!  Talk to Your Fiance One important step to start with is to talk to your fiance! While the vows can be a sweet surprise, it can still be good to set some parameters or rules for what can or cannot be talked about. If you want a very formal event, it might not be the time to share the slightly cringey pick-up line he used, but if you are eloping, maybe anything is fair game!  It could also be important to make sure both of you are comfortable writing your own vows. Some people find it difficult to write and put their feelings into words, so it might be good to have a back-up plan (like maybe a bridesmaid or best man being there to spell check or practice with).  Make it a Date Night Leading up to the wedding, there are a lot of little details that cloud in. Writing your vows for a date night could be the perfect reminder for why you are marrying your special someone. I’m not saying you have to share your vows right then, but maybe go on a picnic and watch a sunset. Turn around and just write each other a letter! This could spur some perfect ideas for your vows and be a fun way to check something off your list. Share a Story If you are not quite sure what to put in your vows, maybe go for a story! This could be the moment you met or the moment you knew they were the one. Maybe you tell about how they were there to support you in your hardest trial. Either way, sharing little moments can really show your soon-to-be spouse why you love them so much. It is one thing to share the huge moments like the proposal or the first date, but perhaps the more meaningful memories are the smaller ones that will end up forming the rest of your lives together.  Ask Loved Ones for Advice Another place to get inspiration for your vows is to ask relatives for marriage advice! Try asking your grandparents or really anyone in your life that you look up to. Everyone seems to have some sort of advice for how they have stayed married for that long. That could be your perfect opportunity to take something old and turn it into your something new!  Personalize It Lastly, your wedding vows are just for you and your fiance. They are meant to show each other how much you love each other and promise to continue that love in the way you live your life every single day. So, no matter how much pressure you feel to say the “right thing” just remember to make it meaningful for you and the other person standing across from you! Nothing else will matter more than the two of you being happy. It will be so fun to record these vows somewhere and look at it later in the future to see how far you have come.  Love to hear about your vows. Leave a comment and let us know your tips -

The venue is probably going to be your biggest expense. Around $8,000 to $12,000 for a reception venue alone along the Wasatch Front. But there are genuinely beautiful places in Utah that cost nothing or close to nothing.
