How to Have a More Sustainable Wedding

As beautiful and memorable as they are, weddings can produce a lot of waste! We want you to enjoy your wedding day to the fullest but we also want to help you be sustainable. Here are just a few ways that you can reduce waste on your special day. A lot can be done with florals to improve your wedding sustainability. Many people don’t realize that the wedding flower industry produces mass amounts of CO2. Most wedding flowers are grown outside of the United States and have to be flown in and then transported by delivery trucks. All of those miles of gas add up. Because of this, it’s much more sustainable to source your wedding flowers from a local florist. This will also support your local economy. Better yet, another alternative is to use live, potted plants instead of cut flowers. Equally as beautiful, yet not nearly as wasteful, these plants will last beyond just your wedding day. If instead you choose to stick with the traditional one-use flower route, consider donating them to a nursing home or hospital after your wedding, so that they can continue to be enjoyed. The vendors you choose can also have an impact on how sustainable your wedding is. Choosing local vendors, such as those you can find on our website, boosts your local economy and is more sustainable for your community in the long run. Small businesses like local caterers, dress shops, and photographers will thank you! You can also be wise in your vendor selection by choosing a venue that reuses decorations rather than disposes of them. If your wedding isn’t at a venue, there are still ways you can make an effort to be sustainable! Most weddings end up with all sorts of decorations like centerpieces and table cloths that will never get used again; instead of throwing them away, consider donating them to a thrift shop or your local homeless shelter- they are often looking for ways to make their dining rooms more festive, especially around the holidays. If you can, donating your leftover food to a local food bank or homeless shelter is another great way to not only reduce waste, but also to give back to your community.  Each of these changes are small, but together they can make a considerable difference. We hope your wedding day is as sustainable as it is magical!

The venue is probably going to be your biggest expense. Around $8,000 to $12,000 for a reception venue alone along the Wasatch Front. But there are genuinely beautiful places in Utah that cost nothing or close to nothing.
