Your friends and family want to wish you well as you start a new adventure. Everyone has plenty they want to say to you and your new spouse. This means the real question is, who gets to give a speech at the wedding? Here are a few ideas about ways to keep your reception traditional or ways to mix it up a little!

Family

Often the family of the bride and groom speak at weddings. Sometimes this is their parents or grandparents, and other times it is just siblings. This can be a time for a grandparent to tell how they stayed married so long or a parent to tell the moment they knew their son or daughter’s significant other was here to stay. Of course it is always funny to hear how siblings were mischievous in their youth, but usually everyone ends up tearing up towards the end when they share how much their sibling truly means to them. You will be starting a new life with your spouse, so the wedding reception can be a special night to make memories with your family.

Bridal Party

Another option for speakers is to pull from the bridal party! It is common for the maid of honor or best man to give speeches. They could tell stories from the glory days of college or a funny story no one has heard about how the couple actually met. Maybe the speech is really just bragging rights for helping the newlyweds end up together. Either way, this is such a special moment for your friends as well. Just make sure that your friends are up to the challenge!

Bride + Groom

A less common route to go is to have both the bride and the groom give a speech! This could be perfect if you had a traditional ceremony. Your speech could be one last special moment that is recorded for years to come. It allows you to go into more detail that is usually put into vows, while still making it special for your wedding day. You could even just write your significant other a letter and then read it at the reception. That could be one way to tie the reception in to the two of you, rather than making it all about the food or dancing. It is one last moment for the two of you to declare your love for each other.
