Applying for a marriage license should be at the top of your checklist. After all, without a marriage license, your marriage won’t be considered legal. This is important for banking, taxes, insurance, name changes, and other legal purposes. The process of applying for a marriage license requires multiple steps, but through careful preparation, you’ll be ready for your wedding in no time!

What is a marriage license?

A marriage license is a legal document that authorizes a couple to be married. It is signed by the couple being married and the officiant of the marriage. After the marriage, the couple will receive a marriage certificate.

Requirements

Marriage License requirements vary from state to state. Please check with your local county office for specific requirements. Here are the State of Utah License Requirements.

The first step to applying for your marriage license is visiting your county clerk’s office. The appointment normally takes about an hour, and appointments can be booked online.  A couple must appear together and be of legal age (18 in most states) for the appointment. Younger couples usually need to have written parental consent.

What do I need to bring?

When applying for a  marriage license, you must bring primary identification (driver’s license, passport, military ID, state ID card, or birth certificate). On the application, you will fill out information such as:

  • Full names
  • Social security numbers
  • Permanent addresses
  • Date and place of birth
  • Education completed
  • Expected ceremony date
  • Names of parents
  • Date and parents’ birthplace
  • If you have been divorced, you must provide a date of when the divorce was finalized

The cost of a marriage license varies. In Utah, the price ranges from $20-$50. The cost guarantees two copies of your marriage certificate. Be sure to inquire about acceptable payment methods as checks are often not accepted and some states require cash payment. Remember, a marriage license is only valid for 30-90 days.

Who can perform the marriage ceremony?

A marriage ceremony can be performed by county clerks, rabbis, ordained ministers/priests of any religious denominations, mayors, and judges. After the wedding, the officiant provides a marriage certificate to the couple and files it with the county or state. Make sure you schedule a time in advance to apply for your wedding license so that you’re ready for your big day!
