You and your significant other likely know each other better than anyone else in the world, but before you get married there are some conversations you’re going to need to have.  Even if you think you’ve discussed these topics before, we highly recommend you double check and have an in-depth discussion about it.  You may be surprised at your different interpretations of things.

Finances

Money can be a painful topic, but it’s crucial that you and your groom or bride-to-be discuss it before you’re married.  For instance, are you going to combine bank accounts once you’re married?  How are you going to manage a budget?  Another topic to bring up here would be work.  Who’s going to be working?  For how long?  If you address these concerns before your wedding day it will help you have a smoother transition into married life and teach you to openly communicate with your spouse, even when it’s hard.

Kids

Kids are another potentially touchy subject.  You’ll want to discuss each of your expectations regarding children.  Are you planning to have kids?  If so, when?  How do you want to raise them?  There’s lots of ground to cover, but it can be a great experience for you both to discuss how you imagine your future family.  Remember to be patient and loving with each other.  You may not immediately agree on some things, but you can come to a conclusion that is good for both of you.

Future

The last thing we highly recommend you discuss are your future plans.  What are things you want to accomplish that are of high priority?  Some examples would be getting a degree, starting a career, opening your own business, or going on a study abroad.  Talking about these things are important so that you know what’s on the table in regards to making future plans.  It will also be a great opportunity for you to discover ways to support each other in reaching your goals.

Remember, we don’t want you to be frightened when it comes to having potentially tough discussions.  Communication is key when it comes to any relationship.  Having these discussions now will help you both learn to be better communicators and strengthen your relationship.  We wish you all the best!  Happy wedding planning!
